Campaigns: HBO's Addiction

Activities in Four Cities

Philadelphia: PRO-ACT ( Pennsylvania Recovery Organization)

  • Hosted a premiere on March 5 th at the Prince Music Theatre with over 500 in attendance and a Panel of experts (including two people from the documentary)
  • Hosted town hall meetings in 4-5 counties surrounding Philadelphia
  • Promoted house parties in Southeastern Pennsylvania
  • Currently working with local churches to host screenings as part of a Faith Based Initiative
  • Working with labor unions in Philadelphia to showcase the HBO documentary
  • Hosting viewings of HBO documentary in area schools
  • Planning to host strategic meeting with 3 other target groups:
    • Medical Schools and Professionals
    • Faith Based Communities
    • County Governments and Singe County Authorities to develop ways to best use materials within their systems.
  • Planning Annual Rally for Recovery on September 15 th

Dallas: APAA (Association for Persons Affected by Addiction)

  • Held a Town Hall Meeting on March 1 st at Eastfield College – showed 27 minute version of documentary and put together an expert panel to discuss film and field questions.
  • Hosted a premiere on March 13 th at the Angelica Theatre – also included an expert panel.
  • Hosted ten or more house parties throughout Dallas.
  • Currently working to educate, support, and advocate for prevention, treatment and long term recovery and will provide materials on policy issues addressed in the program such as ending insurance discrimination; expand opportunities for medication-assisted recovery; and make it possible for people to access treatment and get the help they need when they need it for recovery.
  • Planning to start an Addiction Recovery Show on television Access channels and increase avenues for people to tell the Heroes and Sheroes Journey of long term recovery. We are engaging public officials, law enforcement, families, friends and allies to change public perceptions of recovery, end discrimination and keep a focus on the fact that recovery works and is making life better for millions of Americans.

Richmond: The McShin Foundation

  • Hosted a premiere on March 8 th at the Byrd Theatre with 1,100 in attendance and an expert panel made up of eight professionals who work in the field directly related to the topics of the show. The panel was available to answer questions, make statements, and provide invaluable information about each topic covered in the show. Success in attendance was due in part to outreach to treatment centers, hospitals, outpatient centers, local high schools, drug courts, community service boards and state delegates and Senators. Our organization is a group of young and enthusiastic people working hard to showcase power of long-term recovery

Chicago: A Safe Haven

  • Hosted a premiere on March 5 th at the Palmer House Hilton with over 500 in attendance and an expert panel that focused on utilizing more recovery support services including advocacy in government funding initiatives (housing; employment advocacy; voucher and insurance benefits; social enterprise and zoning issues for service providers of residential recovery programs.)
  • Held house parties throughout Chicago to watch the show
  • The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) has committed to making a mandatory viewing of the HBO Addictions Telecast for all Correctional Centers with treatment components/community re-entry.
  • Promoting House parties throughout Illinois
  • Planning a Rally for Recovery event
