Campaigns: A&E's Intervention show
In April 2005, Faces & Voices of Recovery organized a letter-writing campaign aimed at the Arts & Entertainment Network (A&E), asking its President and CEO for sweeping changes in its reality show Intervention.
In letters to the network, advocates expressed their concerns that the show reinforces the most negative stereotypes of people with alcohol and other drug problems and misses the real reality -- recovery from alcoholism and drug dependence.
Faces & Voices asked A&E to focus on the true reality -- the hope of seeing people who have struggled through recovery and have come out on the other side, better than ever so that viewers could experience what it means for people to go through recovery and turn their lives around.
Faces & Voices also asked that the Intervention web site provide information that would direct viewers to addiction recovery resources, including the federal government’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s toll-free referral helpline at 1 800-662-HELP.
