Campaigns: Recovery Voices Count

June 13, 2008: McCain at Town Hall Meeting in New Jersey

Republican Presidential Nominee Sen. John McCain held a town hall meeting at Burlington County College on June 13, drawing a crowd of 2,000 that included a group involved in New Jersey’s Recovery Voices Count (RCV-NJ). The Recovery Voices Count contingent attended the town meeting to ask addiction policy questions of McCain and to present him with a Candidate Pledge form, asking him to commit to policies promoting addiction treatment, prevention, and recovery.

Although the RVC-NJ representatives weren’t able to speak with Senator McCain, they did speak with his State Chairman, Sen. Bill Baroni. Senator Baroni expressed interest in working with the group moving forward. RVC-NJ representatives did give the pledge to three New Jersey Republican candidates running for Congress:  US Senate candidate Rep. Richard Zimmer; Rep. Chris Smith running for re-election in CD-4; and, Medford Mayor Chris Myers running for an open Congressional seat in CD-3. Group members also spoke with National Republican Committeewoman Janice Mitchell-Mintz.

New Jersey’s largest newspaper, The Newark Star Ledger, is reporting that our state is seen as competitive in the presidential race with both campaigns stating numerous visits are expected in the coming months. Recent poll results show McCain trailing Obama by six percentage points in the state. The US House Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has targeted open House Republican seats in Congressional Districts 3 and 7. Democratic State Sen. John Adler is challenging Republican Mayor Chris Myers in District 3 and Republican State Senator Leonard Lance is challenging Democratic Assemblywoman Linda Stender in District 7.

With growing attention to New Jersey, there will be many opportunities for Recovery Voices Count-New Jersey members to meet with and question Senators McCain and Obama as well as Congressional candidates throughout the general election season.  RVC-NJ is also planning to host a town hall forum in Congressional District 7.  To learn more about Recovery Voices Count in New Jersey, contact Jeanette Grimes at jgrimes@ncaddnj.org.
