Campaigns: There’s Nothing Glamorous About Addiction

Dior Marketing: Skyler Kelley's Mural

Skyler Kelly, an 18 year old student, will be entering his first year of college at Boston's School of Fine Art. Skyler has tagged in Portland ME and some freight cars you may have seen lumbering across the country. When Skyler first saw the Dior add he immediately thought of using there symbols to convey how he and other artists involved in The Garage prevention/recovery center saw it.

The Garage prevention/recovery center is an innovative new center for youth in our community. Social changes are altering the conditions in which adolescents prepare for adulthood. With this in mind The Garage has created culturally relevant space in a community based Indoor Skatepark. The park includes a coffee shop with an "Unplugged" stage for concerts, poetry slams, and mime. A 10,000 square foot skate park that some riders are saying is the best in the state. Immediate projects include a photo/media center, (we just received a gift that includes $6,000.00 worth of equipment!) arts center and parent viewing area. Our grand opening saw 500-600 people ride, BMX bike and rollerblade. 5 bands played during the two days.

The Garage is helping give new visual symbols to the idea of "wrap around services". Peer mentoring programs will have young people working in the park, store and coffee shop. Our youth advocates are looking at powerful ways to show that young people can be key catalysts for change in there communities. This initiative has been nothing short of remarkable. 4 newspaper articles and calls from all over the State of Maine are coming in asking for more information. At the heart of recovery we see the powerful images of Sanctuary. Our vision is to open that door. We insist on the mandate spoken of throughout the new recovery movement.

"to create physical and psychological space in which healing can occur."

Martin O'Brien is the Director of The Garage and the host of "Grace Street talk/music radio" in Portland ME. Grace Street focuses on addiction and recovery. Marty makes his home in Bath, ME with his wife Deborah.
