Meritorious Recognition Awards

In 2009 Faces & Voices recognized three organizations for their contributions to the national recovery movement. They are Alabama Voices for Recovery, People Advocating Recovery, and The Recovery Alliance of El Paso. Congratulations to these outstanding organizations!

Alabama Voices for Recovery has been organizing since 2003 to give a voice to people in recovery, establish a legislative presence, reduce the stigma associated with recovery and pursue funding to increase the availability of treatment services. With over 4000 members across Alabama, it focuses on advocacy and public education. Alabama Voices led a successful effort to increase state funding by $6.1 million for addiction services and sponsors Advocacy Workshops in all four regions of the state each year.

People Advocating Recovery (PAR) has been advocating for recovery for the last six years in Kentucky. It has grown from a handful of individuals to six chapters and 4,000 members. In addition to putting a face and a voice on recovery, PAR focuses on influencing public policy. PAR supports addressing addiction as a health care rather than a criminal justice issue, supporting funding for treatment and recovery programs and spearheading an outstanding public education and advocacy campaign to restore voting rights to Kentuckians with felony convictions.

Recovery Alliance of El Paso was founded in 1998 to engage people in recovery, their family members and other allies in the public dialogue about addiction, treatment, and recovery. Everyone who works or volunteers for the Alliance is in recovery or a community ally and all services are delivered in the cultural framework of the US-Mexico border. The Alliance focuses on providing peer services and has been instrumental in developing recovery coaching and recovery community centers, opening their own center in November 2002.
