About Us

Dallas, Texas

The Joel Hernandez Award recognizes one local, state or regional recovery community organization for its success in assessing the specific needs of their community and carrying out a vision and mission of mobilizing resources within and outside the recovery community to increase the prevalence and quality of long-term recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs.

APAA is led and governed by the recovery community - people in long-term recovery, their families, friends and allies. Since it was founded 13 years ago, APAA has become an important recovery resource in Dallas and throughout Texas, providing recovery community supports for people seeking or in recovery and their family members. APAA’s educational activities range from programs like “Recovery 101" to "Recovery at the Movies." In Dallas, APAA provides peer recovery support services such as recovery support groups and recovery coaching for the homeless, individuals in treatment centers, jails and drug courts. Over 300 individuals and family members visit APAA’s Recovery Center each week. APAA promotes and advocates for recovery at the local, state and national levels as well. Collaborating with partners in the Dallas community, APAA members are working to advance the rights of people seeking and in recovery. APAA has been a pioneering force in the recovery advocacy movement; its members and leaders embody the passion and dedication that we are seeing in growing numbers of recovery community organizations across the country.

To learn more about APAA visit their web site.
