No new funding for Recovery Community Services Program (RCSP)
The federal government's Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has announced that in 2006 there will be no new funding for the only federal program that supports recovery community organizations around the country.
30 RCSP grantees are demonstrating that by bringing the recovery community together in cities, towns and reservations across our country, people who are no longer using alcohol or other drugs can be reunited with their families, linked to jobs, housing and other supports and become productive, healthy members of their communities.
According to the Institute of Medicine, RCSP grantees' services "prevent relapse, promote timely reentry into treatment when relapse occurs, and aid in achieving sustained recovery and an enhanced quality of life." Peer services provide the community connectedness and social support that are so necessary to sustain recovery.
Early next week we will be sending out information about actions that you can take to oppose the cut, but wanted to let you know about this decision that must be reversed.
