Advocates Mobilize for Recovery Month 2006

  • The first and largest nationwide turnout of people in long-term recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs, their family members, friends and allies will take place on Saturday, September 16th when over 40 events across the country participate in Rally for Recovery! Find out how you can participate in events happening in your community.
  • Recovery Month observances will kick off with the Recovery Association Project’s 5th Annual Hands Across the Bridge on Labor Day, September 4th where thousands of advocates will hear from speakers using Faces & Voices’ new messaging.
  • Faces & Voices of Recovery is sponsoring a Congressional briefing on recovery support services featuring Don Coyhis of White Bison, Beverley Haberle of PRO-ACT and Phillip Valentine of Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) on September 28th in the US House of Representatives. Details to follow.
  • Under the Influence: The Film Series kick off with When a Man Loves a Woman on September 6th in Washington, DC.
  • Use Faces & Voices of Recovery’s Recovery Community Civic Engagement campaign materials at your Recovery Month observances and celebrations!

The Second Chance Act Moving through Congress

Bills that would help address the needs of people who are returning to their communities following incarceration will be before Congress when it returns after its August recess. The House bill, H.R. 1704, has 121 bi-partisan cosponsors and was approved by the House Judiciary committee in July. More…

Tune in to Jail-based recovery on "30 Days"

On August 30th at 10 pm Eastern/Pacific, the FX television network series "30 Days" will focus on jail and a jail-based treatment and recovery program in Richmond, Virginia. Morgan Spurlock, creator of the "Supersize Me" movie about the fast food industry, checks into jail and does some of his “time” in a jail-based treatment and recovery program. Spurlock makes a strong case for not warehousing those with alcohol and other drug programs without access to treatment and recovery support services. According to Spurlock, “we need better rehabilitation for those behind bars.”

Congressional Caucus on Addiction, Treatment and Recovery

Recovery advocates from around the country and our allies have recruited 82 members of Congress to join the bi-partisan Congressional Caucus on Addiction, Treatment and Recovery chaired by Representatives Patrick Kennedy (D-MA) and Jim Ramstad (R-MN) . The Maine Alliance for Addiction Recovery will be honoring members of the Maine Congressional delegation who have joined the Caucus at their September 16th Rally for Recovery! event. If your member of Congress hasn’t joined yet, ask them to become part of this important group of Representatives!

The Johnson Institute's America Honors Recovery luncheon

will honor six individuals for their distinguished service in giving back to their communities so that future generations may know the power and possibility of recovery. This year’s six awardees include Faces & Voices of Recovery board members Lisa Mojer-Torres and Tom Hill, Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) Executive Director Phillip Valentine, Rev. Dr. Lottie Jones Hood, and Mary Jane Hanley. Congratulations! Tickets and further information on the America Honors Recovery awards luncheon is available from The Johnson Institute.

Use our new “We Recover and We Vote” buttons and “Another Voter for Recovery!” bumper stickers in your campaign.
