Hearings in Washington, DC

Recovery advocates in Washington, DC have come together as the DC Recovery Community Alliance (RCA). Members of the group testified before DC Councilmember Jim Graham (shown in the picture below) at a hearing before the City’s Committee on Consumer and Regulatory Affairs on behalf of two laws that benefit addiction recovery in hearings on Wednesday, October 25. One measure repeals the discriminatory “alcohol exclusion laws” in the DC Law that allow insurance companies to deny claims for hospital care when one is intoxicated. The other bill expands mandated coverage by private insurance for residential and outpatient treatment. RCA members Johnny Allem and Bobby Coffee presented testimony from the recovery community. Testimony on the science and cost benefits of the legislation was presented by three experts from the George Washington University’s Ensuring Solutions Project. Councilmember Graham (center) is shown with RCA members who testified and attended the hearings. He said he expects both measures to become law this year. For further information on RCA, contact Johnny Allem at 202.662.7107 or Naomi Long at 202.669.6071.
