ACTION Campaign launched

Does your organization provide peer recovery support services? Are there treatment providers in your community that could benefit from tools to improve services? Faces & Voices of Recovery is partnering with other organizations in the ACTION Campaign to reduce the barriers to access and engagement in treatment.

The ACTION Campaign has identified twelve practices that treatment and recovery support services agencies and organizations can implement to make their programs more welcoming to people seeking help and their families. The campaign has a goal of improving the lives of 55,000 people through improved treatment services. It challenges 500 treatment providers to implement one of several simple changes in their operations over an 18- month period. Today, nearly 33 percent of those who receive addiction treatment drop out of the programs.

When the changes described below were adopted by treatment providers participating in the Network for the Improvement of Addiction Treatment (NIATx) program, far more people ended up seeking treatment than participants ever thought were possible. NIATx is a partnership between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Paths to Recovery program, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment's Strengthening Treatment Access and Retention program, and a number of independent addiction treatment organizations.

Faces & Voices supports this campaign because we believe it will help more people begin their recovery process and gain a solid start in their recovery. We also believe that recovery community and other organizations providing peer recovery support services can benefit from the tools that have been developed for treatment providers.

The campaign focuses on the following factors:

  • Rapid access to treatment,
  • Increased engagement by those who are in treatment, and
  • A seamless transition from one stage of care to another.

The 39 founding members of NIATx, as well as many other treatment provider organizations, have experienced the following results from implementing the campaign practices:

  • A 34.8 percent reduction in wait times;
  • A 33 percent reduction in no-shows;
  • A 21.5 percent increase in admissions;
  • And a 22.3 percent increase in treatment continuation.

ACTION Campaign tools and technical assistance are free to all who register. The ACTION Web site features a series of ACTION Kits that provide step-by-step instructions on how to implement the NIATx treatment improvement practices. Once they sign up, campaign members will also be invited to participate in regular technical assistance conference calls, a campaign blog, and other peer networking activities.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  1. Check out the ACTION Campaign web site
  2. Decide if it makes sense for your organization to join the campaign
  3. Educate treatment providers in your community about the ACTION Campaign and encourage them to participate.
