SAMHSA Hosts Regional Meetings
Recovery advocates have been participating in regional meetings being hosted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (SAMHSA/CSAT) on developing, strengthening and implementing recovery-oriented systems of care.
CSAT’s Partners for Recovery Initiative is hosting a series of five regional meetings across the country. One is taking place today in Newport, Rhode Island. The meetings are designed to assist States and communities in developing, strengthening, and implementing recovery-oriented systems of care, building on CSAT’s National Summit on Recovery held in September 2005.
The Single State Authority (SSA) for substance abuse services in each State was invited to send a four-member team to one of the regional meetings. The team members include individuals who have the influence to effect change in each State – in addition to the SSA or a designee, team members include representatives from a treatment provider association or a treatment provider, a recovery organization, the recovering community or faith-based provider; and a researcher or an additional key stakeholder. CSAT’s goals for the regional meetings include: informing individuals about the 2005 National Summit on Recovery; providing resources related to the operation of recovery-oriented systems of care; fostering States and organizations to share lessons learned; and providing a venue for individual State team planning to advance recovery-oriented systems of care.
Several resources were developed to advance recovery-oriented approaches and provide information on “recovery-oriented systems of care. They include four draft white papers that are being disseminated through the regional process. They will be made available on the PFR website. They are:
- Approaches to Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care at the State and Local Level: Three Case Studies;
- Provider Approaches to Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care: Four Case Studies;
- Access to Recovery (ATR) Approaches to Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care: Three Case Studies; and
- Guiding Principles and Elements of Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care: What do we know from the research?
Partners for Recovery is assembling a toolkit, which will include examples of recovery-oriented resources that may be used to develop recovery-oriented systems of care.
So far, there have been three regional meetings in:
- Western Region, Portland, Oregon, April 2007;
- Southwest Region, Dallas, Texas, July 2007; and
- Central Region, Chicago, Illinois, September 2007
The New England meeting is being held today in Newport, Rhode Island and a final meeting will be held in Charleston, South Carolina in January 2008.
