The Washington, DC office of the Legal Action Center is seeking to hire a Policy Associate whose responsibilities will include advocacy and federal relations. The position is available immediately.

The Center is a non-profit law and policy organization working for sound policies on behalf of people with alcohol and drug histories, criminal records, and HIV/AIDS. Responsibilities

The Policy Associate will focus on federal policy advocacy and analysis of issues related to ending discrimination against people with addiction histories and people with criminal records and expanding alcohol and drug treatment, prevention, recovery, and research. Responsibilities will include: conducting policy research; tracking and analyzing legislation, statutes and regulations; writing policy materials for Congress and advocates; writing articles for an e-publication on federal drug, alcohol, and criminal justice policy; helping to develop and implement advocacy strategies; and participating in coalition and Hill meetings.

Qualifications

  • Public policy experience (minimum 2 years), preferably in the areas of health, federal appropriations, and/or criminal justice issues. Hill experience and/or knowledge of alcohol and drug issues a plus. Graduate degrees in law or public policy strongly preferred.
  • Excellent policy analysis and writing skills, including the ability to review and summarize legislation, regulations and conduct research.
  • Strong communication and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and exhibit strong organizational skills.
  • Desire and ability to work in a small (3-4 people), busy office.

Salary Range

Commensurate with experience and qualifications, plus a generous benefit package.
