The Institute for Addiction and Recovery at Rhode Island College
The Institute for Addiction and Recovery at Rhode Island College was established to strengthen the state’s capacity to assist individuals and communities with addiction recovery efforts.
In this unique collaboration, Rhode Island College opened a scholastic hub for the analysis of issues related to addiction and recovery, to enhance practice in substance abuse prevention, treatment and recovery, and to support individuals and families in recovery.
At a January 17 launch in Providence, RI, over 100 people gathered to kick-off the Institute, which will work collaboratively with academic departments at Rhode Island College (RIC) that offer degree programs and courses in addiction studies. RIC’s psychology department offers a bachelor’s of science degree in chemical dependency and addiction studies. About 10 other departments at RIC, including the Schools of Social Work and Nursing, also offer chemical dependency and addiction studies as part of their curriculums.
Sandra Puerini Del Sesto, advocate, educator and consultant in the treatment
of addiction and its prevention for more than 30 years, is the Institute’s director. She is the co-founder of Initiatives for Human Development, Rhode Island¹s only statewide prevention agency and co-founder of CODAC, a statewide agency providing substance abuse treatment services, and the R.I. Teen Institute, a program that has trained and supported youth leadership in prevention since 1989.
The Institute’s governing board members are Dorothy Bianco, retired RIC professor of
psychology; Tom Coderre, National Field Director at Faces & Voices of Recovery; Daniel Del Prete, president of the DelPrete Foundation; Tania Garcia, Project Director of the Northeast Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies; Stephen Gumbley, chair of the Institute’s steering committee, and co-director of the Addiction Technology Transfer Center of New England at Brown University; Robin Montvilo, RIC’s administrator of chemical dependency and addiction service programs; and Susan Storti, a national consultant on behavioral health concerns.
For more information about the Institute, contact Sandra DelSesto at 401.456.9809 or by email at sdelsesto@ric.edu.
