National Call-in Day
Thanks to the thousands of people who participated in Wednesday's National Call-in Day to end insurance discrimination! We'll keep you posted on further developments.
Recovery Voices Count
- Non-partisan civic engagement activities are underway all across the country as part of Recovery Voices Count. In El Paso, Texas, the Recovery Alliance's campaign slogan is Got Recovery? Get Active!!! Congratulations to Joseph Sanchez for this great idea!
- The Democratic and Republican parties will be developing policy statements, or platforms, for consideration at their National Conventions. These are opportunities to raise our issues and develop public policy to support recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. The Democratic National Committee is asking the public to host and attend "platform meetings" between July 19th and July 27th, they're coming up soon! Learn more...
- The Whole Health campaign has launched a petition drive calling on the likely Presidential candidates and Republican and Democratic National committees to embrace health policy reforms to improve the lives of people with addiction and mental illness. Sign the petition here.
Recovery Month
September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month and September 20th is Rally for Recovery when recovery community organizations and allies will be coming together all across the country to share the reality of recovery with our friends and neighbors and call for policies to make it possible for more people to get the help they need to recover. The Association of Recovery Schools will be holding its seventh annual conference "Joining Our Voices" in Nashville, TN on July 25-26, 2008.
National TASC (Treatment Alternatives for Safer Communities) will be holding its 15th Conference on Drugs and Crimes in Chicago, IL on September 3-5, 2008.
A new report, How to Implement a Model to Get Youth off Drugs and Out of Crime, from project directors at ten Reclaiming Futures project sites outlines how they have developed a successful six-step model for helping teens in the juvenile justice system with alcohol and other drug problems.
Coverage for All: Inclusion of Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders in State Healthcare Reform Initiatives reports that although more than one in four adult Americans without medical insurance have a mental illness or substance use disorder or both, state health care initiatives intended to cover the uninsured are neglecting people with these conditions.
