Rallying for Recovery 2008!

Victory on Ending Insurance Discrimination in Sight!
On Tuesday, the US House and US Senate voted on the "Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act." The House approved the bill, H.R. 6983,on a vote of 376 to 47. In the Senate, the bill was included as part of a much larger bill, what’s called the tax extenders package, on a vote of 93 to 2. While both bills are the same when it comes to how they will address insurance discrimination facing people with addiction and mental illness, each has a different way to pay for the bill. Those differences must be addressed before a final bill can be sent to the President for his signature. The Washington Post reported on the progress this morning. Thanks for all of your advocacy and we’ll keep you posted on further developments.
Largest Rally for Recovery ever!
On September 20 over 40,000 people in recovery, family members, friends and allies came together to speak out and take action for recovery. What a day for recovery! In St. Louis, MO over 1300 people joined Hands Across the Bridge after hearing from Academy Award winning actor Louis Gossett, Jr., recovery speakers and others at the National Hub event. Calls came in from around the country, reporting on the rallies, walks and meetings organized by advocates. We are collecting and will be publishing a collection of photographs from many of these incredible events. If you haven’t sent us your pictures with a caption, please email them to us.
The Recovery Bill of Rights
On September 20 we released The Recovery Bill of Rights. Across the country, recovery advocates endorsed The Recovery Bill of Rights at Rally for Recovery and other Recovery Month events and activities. We have an endorsement form that you can use in the months ahead or you can endorse The Recovery Bill of Rights online and look at pictures of advocates in St. Louis.
