Recovery Month 2008

The Recovery Project: Rounding out a month of the most public display of recovery in our nation’s history, on September 27 The Recovery Project was launched in New York, with thousands of people led by Recovery Delegates from each of the states taking off from Cadman Plaza in Brooklyn, heading across the Brooklyn Bridge to rally at City Hall Park. Drug court participants and graduates; people newly in recovery; family members; people in long-term recovery; elected and appointed public officials; the many friends of the recovery community all came together to rally and let others know about the reality of recovery. Comedian Mark Lundholm was the Master of Ceremonies and interviewed Recovery Delegates, who have been sharing their stories with local newspapers and television stations as well as at the Recovery Rally, giving hope to others and demonstrating that recovery is working across our nation.

Faces & Voices board chair Carol McDaid addressed the crowd and we used our Advocacy Action Area to register voters, let people know about The Recovery Bill of Rights and get pledges to vote in November. Thanks so much to recovery advocates from the MARS project and others who helped on the Advocacy Action Area.

Faces & Voices joined with the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Partnership for a Drug-Free America and other organizations in this important endeavor. The Recovery Project is a new multi-year campaign of A&E Television Networks to generate awareness that addiction is a treatable disease and that recovery is possible.
