The Recovery Bill of Rights
Recovery community organizations are using The Recovery Bill of Rights, now available as a poster to get the word out that all Americans have a right to recover from addiction. Alabama Voices for Recovery distributed 1000 copies of the poster during Recovery Month. In Ohio, Donna Conley of Ohio Citizen Advocates visited a women’s prison therapeutic community called Tapestry at the Marysville Reformatory for Women to talk with a group of 60 women about their voting rights. She gave each woman a copy of The Recovery Bill of Rights and reviewed and discussed each one.
At the end, she asked the women what they thought about it. Donna reports that, “the women started standing up and talking about the point that hit home for them the most. The thanks expressed for this document were profuse. Many talked about how seeing The Recovery Bill of Rights in print was so empowering for them and they were amazed that someone would put something like this together. It was a very moving experience for me as well, as the empowerment was tangible in the room. I wanted you to know the impact The Recovery Bill of Rights is having.”
