Wellstone-Domenici law update

Faces & Voices gives a special thanks to Aaron Kucharski for the incredible job he did working as our Field Organizer on the Recovery Voices Count project. Many of you met Aaron as he crisscrossed the country working with recovery community organizations and recovery advocates to organize campaigns to register voters, educate candidates and the public and get-out-the-vote on Election Day. Recovery Voices Counted!
Aaron spent the last few weeks documenting the experiences of the 12 sites that were part of Recovery Voices Count. In New Jersey advocates collected the stories of voters including Lynnette Small-Gavin, who reported, “"I got to the polls at 5:35 am and there were already about 25 people ahead of me. I encountered several young men I knew from the community who are in recovery. They were so proud to be able to vote and very touched by being able to have their voices heard. Talking to them made a profound impact on me." We’ll be posting the final report and pictures, materials and other resources later this month.
The Recovery Bill of Rights
Recovery community organizations are using The Recovery Bill of Rights, now available as a poster to get the word out that all Americans have a right to recover from addiction. The New Hampshire Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors Association (NHADACA) awarded Faces & Voices of Recovery its 2008 Legislative Advocacy Award on November 21. Board member Steve Gumbley accepted the award for Faces & Voices work organizing the December 2, 2007 Presidential Town Hall meeting in New Hampshire.

Compact for Racial Justice: An Agenda for Fairness and Unity is a new publication offering an agenda for fairness and unity in communities, politics and the law. It offers four specific recommendations for immediate action: implement racial impact statements, abolish the mandatory detention of immigrants, support people in reentry and the communities where they return, and make racial equity a standard for all criminal justice policy and practice.
Discovering Choices is a new book from Al-Anon Family Groups that shares the experiences, strengths and hopes of Al-Anon members.
