Rally for Recovery

US Representatives Mary Bono Mack and Patrick Kennedy introduced a Congressional Resolution about Recovery Month.

On May 1, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45), joined by Congressman Patrick Kennedy (RI-01), introduced a resolution (H.Con.Res. 115) recognizing the goals of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. Bono Mack is the Vice Co-chair of the Congressional Addiction Treatment and Recovery Caucus, co-chaired by Kennedy. They are highlighting the worthwhile activities that will take place during September across the country and the ongoing work of various groups across the nation to address substance abuse.

When the resolution was introduced, Bono Mack said, "Substance abuse and addiction is a nationwide health crisis that has touched the lives of virtually every American. It is critical that we step up our efforts to recognize the success of those who are recovering from addiction while also increase awareness about the importance of prevention and treatment programs, not only for the individual but for the entire family and community. Through our ongoing efforts, we can put a stop to the dangerous cycle of drug abuse and addiction, and it is my hope that this legislation encourages Americans across the country to take action that will help expand and improve abuse treatment for individuals and families in need."

"It´s important to get the message out there that recovery is possible," said Kennedy. "Treatment for alcohol and drug addiction is successful, and when people have access to the resources they need, they can and do recover. Raising awareness is essential to helping reduce the stigma, expand treatment options, and enhance wrap-around services for individuals and families. Recovery Month also provides an opportunity to celebrate the successes of so many Americans who have fought so hard for their lives."
