Advocacy Action Areas

Advocacy activities are an important part of Rally for Recovery! They motivate people to get involved in recovery advocacy activities all year long. Louisville, KY's September 5 Rally for Recovery! featured allied groups coming together to promote the restoration of voting rights for disenfranchised Kentuckians. Rally for Recovery 2009 was sponsored by Addiction Recovery Advocates of Kentuckiana (ARAK) and People Advocating Recovery (PAR). Over 1000 people in recovery, families, friends and allies joined together to celebrate all of the joys of long-term recovery. Click here to see photos!

The Rally kicked off with a Proclamation from Governor Steve Beshear recognizing the event and was followed by supporting remarks from Justice Will Scott of the Kentucky Supreme Court. He was followed by people telling their recovery stories and loads of entertainment.

Advocacy Action in Kentucky: Kentuckians for the Commonwealth (KTFC) helped people start the process of requesting a partial pardon from the Governor to get their rights back. Over 300 people took action by filling out postcards to legislators encouraging them to restore voting rights for former felons automatically once they've served their time. Others took action by sitting down to write a personal letter to legislators, joining KFTC, or pledging to take part in a statewide call-in week that started on September 9, 2009.
