Don Coyhis, White Bison’s Founder and President, was named one of the 10 Social Innovators in Encore Careers to win the 2009 Purpose Prize. The prize honors social entrepreneurs over 60 who are using their experience and passion to take on society's biggest challenges. Don was recognized for his outstanding leadership in creating and developing the Wellbriety Movement. People Advocating Recovery (PAR), Kentucky’s statewide recovery community organization, received Kentuckian for the Commonwealth’s (KFTC) Ally of the Year Award at KFTC’s Annual meeting for all of its work on restoration of voting rights in Kentucky. Because so many people in recovery have felony convictions in their background, “PAR has been especially powerful in mobilizing people to come to Frankfort to be a part of our rallies and speak-outs to restore voting rights. Congratulations and thanks to PAR for all that they do.”

Phil Valentine, Executive Director of Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) was named Hartford, Connecticut’s 2009 Nonprofit Business Leader of the Year.

Long-Term Strategies to Reduce the Stigma Attached to Addiction, Treatment, and Recovery within the City of Philadelphia (With Particular Reference to Medication-Assisted Treatment/Recovery) by William White is a new article on Philadelphia, PA’s recovery transformation that focuses on the stigma experienced by people in medication-assisted treatment and long-term medication-assisted recovery, and outlines strategies that could be used by the Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Mental Retardation Services and its many community partners to reduce addiction/recovery-related stigma.

The Recovery Revolution: Will it include children, adolescents, and transition age youth? by William L. White, M.A., Arthur C. Evans, Jr., Ph.D., Sadé Ali, M.A., Ijeoma Achara-Abrahams, Ph.D., & Joan King, APRN, BC explores the potential and limitations of recovery as an organizing concept for services to children, adolescents, and transition age youth, and offers recommendations on how services for these populations can be integrated into recovery- and resiliency-focused, behavioral health care systems transformation efforts.

The Legal Action Center’s Webinar series on Federal anti-discrimination laws protecting people in recovery and those with criminal records has been archived and can be listened to online. Topics include Employment Discrimination Against People with Alcohol/Drug Histories; Housing, Health Care, and other forms of Discrimination Against People with Alcohol/Drug Histories; Medication-Assisted Treatment: Special Anti-Discrimination Issues; and Legal Rights of People with Criminal Records
