Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness (USARA) Executive Director.

The USARA Executive Director reports to the USARA Board of Directors and manages contracted consultants and employees. USARA’s budget is $150,000/year and the Executive Director’s salary is $52,000 – 68,000 depending on experience and benefits. The deadline for applications is December 18, 2009.

Overview of Responsibilities and Duties:

Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for overall management and operation of the Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness a Utah Non-profit (501c3).

The Executive Director will work to identify and advocate for needed services related to substance misuse, infuse hope, and increase public awareness that long-term recovery is a reality while ensuring compliance with board directives and applicable grantor requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Organize, support and promote large recovery community events across the state of Utah (Recovery Day)
  • Manage advocacy efforts and develop relationships with legislators to advocate for the recovery community and address problems related to accessing services, encouraging changes in services, or the creation of additional services so that our state is more responsive to individual and family needs.
  • Increase participation in and awareness of the USARA Family to Family support program and work to develop a successful peer to peer recovery support program
  • Hold regular Recovery Speakers Education trainings and education events aimed at improving community understanding of the reality of recovery.
  • Fundraising (including grant research, writing, management and reporting, special events planning and implementation, and developing an individual giving program)

Currently USARA has no other employees but the Executive Director would handle all aspects of human resource management including but not limited to hiring and termination, developing position descriptions, setting compensation, working with employees’ and applying board-approved employee policies and benefits in accordance with federal and state requirements.

  • Hiring, overseeing and evaluating consultants
  • Administering approved personnel policies

Representing USARA in meetings and at public events including regularly interacting with other organizations, such as the Utah Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, Salt Lake Substance Abuse Services, The Utah Association of Counties, The Utah Behavioral Health Committee, Local Area Authorities, public and private treatment providers.

To perform effectively in this position, the individual should demonstrate the following competencies. These core competencies represent effective administration of USARA and its programs fulfilling the organization’s mission.

Management: Maintains effective systems of internal controls to account for all receipts and expenditures of funds.

Job Knowledge: Understands the technical aspects of managing a nonprofit organization; Understands the duties and responsibilities of the position and keeps job knowledge up-to-date. Clearly understands the mission of USARA and continuously works to promote USARA and achieve its goals.

Initiative in fulfilling the goals of the organization: the executive director recognizes and brings to the attention of the chair of the board issues that affect the organization, and implements plans to reach organizational goals as determined by the board of directors.

Displays initiative in developing action plans and resolving problems as they occur, in consultation with the chairman and other members of the board.

Communication: Communicates effectively with multiple audiences using a variety of formats. Examples include: written; verbal presentations and briefings; Talking to legislators and to outside groups regarding a variety of issues affecting recovery.

Dependability: Seeks increased responsibility while remaining conscientious, thorough, accurate, and reliable with respect to achieving the organization’s goals. This includes being available and responsive to issues and concerns as they arise.

Education and/or Experience

The Executive Director must possess the above skills, knowledge and qualities which may result from formal education or at least three years experience in business, non-profit operation, or related areas.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this Job, the executive director is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, speak and hear. The position requires extensive computer use so the employee must have sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable otherwise qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Travel

The executive director must be able to travel to attend conferences (in and out of state), training and other events as required to acquire and maintain proficiency in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position and relationships important to the success of the organization’s mission.

Work Environment

The work environment is an office inside the Utah Association of Counties building located at 5397 South Vine Street, Murray Utah 84107. The noise level in the work environment is usually low.
