Recovery Community Organization News

Find out how Advocates for Recovery – Colorado (AFR) showed a powerful documentary, Lost in Woonsocket, eleven times in two weeks across the state of CO. You can bring the film to your community this fall.

It’s about two homeless men living in a tent, both with alcoholism, and how two other men who set out across the United States to do random Acts of Kindness and ran across them and mobilized local resources to help them on their recovery journey.

This April one of the men featured in the show traveled with AFR Executive Director, Tonya Wheeler as part of the program. First they showed Lost in Woonsocket and then Normand Cartier shared his story. Today he is in long-term recovery for over four years and travels across the US to show the documentary and share his passion, love, and care for others.

The screenings were incredible and were done at a variety of places, including residential treatment programs, Colorado Drug Courts, and in other locations. The general public was invited to attend and at each event Cartier was introduced after the documentary aired. When he walked into the room and introduced himself, he was met with a standing ovation, clapping and cheering, and even some tears of gratitude and disbelief. It was hard for people to believe that the man before – a sober, clean cut, compassionate man who spends his time giving back to communities everywhere, was the same man who they had watched in the film.

AFR is grateful to have had the opportunity to bring Lost in Woonsocket and Normand Cartier to Colorado to share his message of hope with us. AFR’s primary goal is showing the truth and reality that recovery does happen. With Normand’s help and the help of Lost and Found in America, which is distributing the documentary, Colorado’s recovery community and recovery allies were able to host these amazing events and share this great story with many others.

If you are interested in seeing the documentary or getting more information about Lost in Woonsocket, you can find them on the web. To talk with Tonya Wheeler more about AFR’s experiences, email her.

Lost in Woonsocket on the Road this fall

The Lost and Found in America Tour featuring the film Lost in Woonsocket will launch during September 2010 as part of National Recovery Month. The award-winning film’s producers are hitting the road with the film's subject Normand Cartier, who has been in recovery since December 2005. His inspiring appearance and speech follows each screening of the film. If you’re having a recovery event during September, October, or November 2010 or would like to schedule one that would include a screening of the film and a visit from Normand, Lost and Found in America is interested in talking with you. You could have the tour stop in your city or town. For more information, check out the tour site and promotional trailer or contact Thea Maichle by phone at (310) 948-3083 or by email.
