CCAR announces recovery center opening

Town Times
February 1, 2007

Hartford - The Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) is announcing the opening of its fourth Recovery Community Center. An open house is being conducted from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, January 25. The newest center is located at 198 Wethersfield Avenue in Hartford.

Federal funding was awarded to CCAR a grassroots community organization made up of people in recovery, family members, allies and other advocates for peer-based services.

CCAR is about "putting a positive face on recovery." Nationally recognized author and historian of recovery Bill White said, "We need a vanguard of people in recovery to offer themselves as living proof that recovery is real."

Laurie Fresher, Peer Services Coordinator for the Hartford Recovery Community Center said, "CCAR is dedicated to educating the community about the limitless possibilities of a life after addiction. There are hundreds of thousands of individuals living successful, happy lives in recovery.

In addition to offering recovery support services we will also provide workshops on a variety of topics."

The Hartford Recovery Community Center will also serve as a community base where individuals in long-term recovery can give back, share their experiences, talents, and gifts.

Phillip Valentine, Executive Director of CCAR, 19 years in recovery, stated, "in my experience with countless people in recovery, I have observed a common thread, a desire to give back that I believe stems from three sources- gratitude, obligation and obedience. We express our gratitude by helping others."

Through its statewide network, CCAR provides support for people at any stage in the recovery process. "This peer-to-peer recovery program is fiscally sound and socially wise," Governor Rell has previously stated. "By connecting people who need help with those who have found help - and with it, fought and won their personal battles - we can provide a highly effective and direct path to recovery.

"The common thread linking these CCAR programs is that they use the power of the 'Recovery Community' to open the door to healing for many others.
