Letters to the Editor

Arizona Daily Star
October 7, 2007

I am in long-term recovery from alcohol addiction, one of millions who are. We are the fortunate ones. But sadly there are other millions who need help with active addiction and cannot get it because they face discrimination from their health insurance companies.

Finally, Congress may help. The Paul Wellstone Mental Health and Addiction Equity Act of 2007 would end discriminatory practices now affecting persons with mental illness and chemical addictions. Reps. Jim Ramstad and Patrick Kennedy have held hearings on this legislation across the country. They have heard countless tragic stories of persons and families denied coverage, even though they had health insurance.

Many thanks to Reps. Ramstad and Kennedy for speaking out about their own addictions and recoveries and giving hope to so many others. Addiction treatment is a bipartisan issue that affects us all in some way. I strongly urge our Arizona congressional delegation to support the Wellstone Act.
