Recovery in the News
Letter to the Editor
Thanks for celebrating recovery
The Reporter
October 15, 2007
On behalf of the Solano Prevention and Recovery Alliance (SPRA) and Vallejo Fighting Back Partnership, we would like to extend our thanks to all who participated in our sixth annual rally and barbecue for recovery, held Sept. 15 in Vallejo. Politicians, service providers, community helpers and hundreds of individuals in recovery from alcohol and other drug use made the event truly inspirational.
This year's theme - "Join the Voices for Recovery ... Saving Lives, Saving Dollars" - was highlighted by keynote speaker Wykalin Powell, who shared his personal journey from addiction to treatment, recovery and the creation of a positive lifestyle.
Other speakers included: Donna Wapner of Benicia, an educator with the Diablo Valley College Addiction Studies Department, who emphasized the importance of education in guiding people through the recovery process; John Allen of Vallejo, who shared insights about the cost of incarceration vs. the cost of treatment; and Gloria Flores of Vacaville, a therapist with more than 20 years of experience who shared her perspective as a person of color and emphasized the importance of reaching out to those in need. Our speakers were also this year's recipients of the James McCarver Jr. Memorial Award to recognize those who have made significant contributions to improving the physical, mental and spiritual health of our community.
Guests were treated to live music by Watersign, face painting by Youth and Family Services and free barbecue. Merchants deserve our thanks and patronage for contributing everything from food to printing.
The purpose of the rally is to spread the message that recovery from addiction is possible, and that treatment for people in need is compassionate public policy and a sound investment. Substance abuse continues to be a national health problem affecting millions of people. It is critical to make people aware that lives ravaged by alcoholism and drug addiction can be reclaimed.
