Recovering alcoholic shares his journey in a 350-mile walk
August 24, 2008
GRAND BLANC TWP., Michigan -- It's been a long journey for Alex Maysura, a recovering alcoholic who has been sober for three years,
There have been ups and downs ... and more than 200 miles.
Maysura, 55, of Troy, spoke to more than 60 people Sunday evening during an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting at UAW Local 1292, 6253 S. Dort Hwy. in Grand Blanc Township. The stop was part of his more-than-350 mile trip from Mackinaw City to West Bloomfield to honor National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month and to share his personal experience.
"Alcohol is a disease. It's not a character flaw and there is help," said Maysura, whose sunburned face shows his recent journey.
His final stop will be Thursday at Maple Grove Center, where he received treatment in Oct. 2005.
"It's a spiritual journey," he said. "This one has the added benefit of spreading the seeds of sobriety."
Kathy Olund, president of Greater Flint Project Vox, a non-profit that advocates for successful treatment for alcohol and drug addictions, said fewer and fewer people are able to get help.
"Alex is one of the fortunate people who found access to his problems," she said.
Maysura said when he's out on the road, by himself just walking, he realizes what it's like not to have anyone there. And it's a sad thing, he said.
"Go home and grab somebody you know and tell them you love them," Maysura told the group Sunday evening.
