Rally For Recovery

John Marc Green

September is National Recovery Month, and the Alabama Department of Mental Health wants to extend help to anyone who needs it.

They're encouraging those who have put addiction behind them to tell their stories: "So that people who are in the throes of addiction can understand that recovery is possible and that life can get better and that everybody can benefit you can personally benefit, employers, families and everybody benefits from somebody enjoying recovery," said Kent Hunt of the State Health Department.

The rally featured music by a Christian band named Redemption Row, and speakers who told about life after addiction. "Treatment works and recovery happens, and I happen to be a person in long time recovery who just celebrated 29 years of recovery just yesterday," said Bill Layfield.

He says there are many resources available for people who are tired of struggling with alcohol or drugs. "This addiction affects some 18, 19 million people in America, one out of every four families but anyone who thinks they might have a problem that's the first step is to ask for help," Layfield said.
