Rally 'Round Recovery
The Herald News Online
September 14, 2008
A warm, sunny day greeted the more than 400 who attended the fourth annual Will County Rally 'Round Recovery on Sept. 6 at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park in Joliet.
The rally, sponsored by the City of Joliet and the Southwest Coalition for Substance Abuse Issues, was a celebration of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
Don Malec , keynote speaker for the fest, celebrated his 7,655 days of sobriety. In his speech, Malec admitted he still takes it "one day at a time. And today is just one more of those days."
But it was more than just another day for the families and children who attended. The event featured pony rides, a petting zoo, Jim Nesci's Cold-Blooded Creatures, Kazoo the clown, prizes and a moon walk.
Messages of hope and encouragement were given by Roger Powell Jr. , who opened the event, as well as state Sen. A.J. Wilhelmi and a number of city and county officials.
Entertainment included rap performances, skits, inspirational songs and more. Many of the acts were presented by talented students from Joliet Township High School, who were signed up by Kelly Bettenhausen of the YESS program.
Twenty-six community organizations were on hand with helpful information. The day ended with an open 12-step meeting.
Event planning committee members included: Paul Lauridsen, Maria Comolli, Theresa Harrison, Eric Brown and Pete McLengihan of Stepping Stones Treatment Center; John Honiotes ; Rich Liebich and Billie Limacher of Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park; Maria Herrera and Cherry Powell of the Education Service Network; Pam Davis of Silver Cross Hospital; Bob Fraser , retired director of management and budget for the City of Joliet; Bonnie McPhillips of Will County Sheriff's Police; Jennifer Cain , Julie McCabe and Dan Prendergast of the Will County state's attorney's office.
September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
