Local candidates discuss addiction, recovery issues

David Hinchey

WILLIMANTIC - Two state House candidates and two state Senate candidates were on hand at the Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery for a question- and-answer session and rally for recovery this morning.

Susan Johnson and Daniel Lein, both vying for the right to represent the 49th District, along with Democratic incumbent state Senate President Pro Tempore Donald Williams Jr., D- Brooklyn, and Willimantic resident and Republican candidate Harry Carboni running in the 29th district, were asked questions on recovery issues by those attending the panel discussion.

Questions ranged from supporting an increase in funding for treatment and recovery services, supporting a bill to end insurance discrimination and putting an emphasis on treatment instead of incarceration.

Other questions included supporting the restoration of federal funding and extension of treatment and doing away with discriminatory policies and laws that prevent those in recovery from getting education, jobs and health insurance.

" It's a medical problem and it should be treated that way," Johnson said, in a response to a question on treatment as an alternative to incarceration.

Johnson said it's difficult to wage a war on drugs when one is really waging a war against people, and that those incarcerated have real difficulty finding work after their recovery.
