When I was a little girl and someone asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I never said "I want to be a drug addict." But that's just what happened.

I began my substance use at age 12 beginning with alcohol and then found my drug of choice..meth. It made me more outgoing, stronger, faster and I didn't have to feel anymore. Over time that changed and I found myself hiding from everyone, weak in mind, body and spirit and feeling like I didn't want to live anymore.

When I was 4 months pregnant with my fourth child, my three children were taken from me and placed into foster care. I went to rehab for 3 months, from there moved into transitional living and earned the privledge of being a mother again. I began my journey of recovery and self-discovery and learned to live a whole new lifestyle clean and sober. I became very involved in the 12 Step Fellowship and participated in peer outreach. I became a peer advocate for the transitional facility that had become my home and for the first time in my life I felt a part of something. I earned a certificate in alcohol and drug studies and currently I am a substance abuse counselor/case manager working with families, helping them to change their lives.

I am a mother, I am a friend, I am a daughter and I am an addict in recovery.
