The Power of Our Stories: Speaking Out for Addiction Recovery Video (2005)

Running Time: 44 minutes
Each video is accompanied by a brochure and a worksheet with group and individual exercises.

The Power of Our Stories is designed to empower people in recovery, their family members, friends, and allies to speak out for addiction recovery. Through example, the video emphasizes the importance of standing up and speaking out. It demonstrates how people are using their stories to change attitudes and policies that stigmatize and discriminate against people seeking or in recovery from addiction to alcohol or drugs.

  • See an instructional session with three recovery advocates who practice telling their stories.
  • Hear prominent individuals from the recovery community share their stories and discuss the importance of putting a face and a voice on recovery.
  • Use The Power of Our Stories brochure and worksheet to get tips and ideas for how to practice and improve your story!

Faces & Voices of Recovery would like to thank the following organizations for the use of footage used in the video:

The Power of Our Stories was made possible by a contract from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment and the generous contributions of recovery advocates from around the country. We are grateful for their support.

We give special thanks to the many people who are shown in this film and to the tens of thousands of people in recovery, their family members, friends and allies, who are using their stories as they organize and mobilize to speak out about the power and the possibility of recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs.
